I work freelance in the theatre as a director and about a third of the time that is with Cartoon de Salvo, I also sometimes act, improvise and write.
I want to see brave, bold, boisterous, unbuckled theatre that wears its heart on its sleeve. I want to make theatre that feels like a party and brings people together. I love stories and how they create change and possibilities. I want to see performers, all people really, become authentic, spontaneous and honest.
Theatre isn’t film, nor is it literature; it’s live and tangible. So I’ve become interested in spontaneity, in live music and playing with the relationship with the audience. I think there’s more to taking risks in the theatre than swearing and taking your clothes off. I believe that any audience member has the capability to connect with complex or even abstract ideas. The bold intention I guess, when I’m acting or making my own shows, is that ultimately I want to change the way people feel about going to the theatre.
